UMF Finishes Regular Season With Win Over Huskies

GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Lauren Watson's (Clinton, Maine/Lawrence) goal with less than 12 minutes to play proved to be the difference as the visiting University of Maine at Farmington Beavers held off the University of Southern Maine Huskies 2-1 in a non-conference Senior Day field hockey game Sunday afternoon at Hannaford Field.  The game was the regular-season finale for both teams.

The Beavers will take a two-game winning streak and a 10-4 overall record into the first round of the North Atlantic Conference playoffs. The Huskies have dropped their last four games to finish the regular season at 7-12.  The Huskies will advance to the Little East Conference tournament.

Watson collected a loose ball to the right of USM senior goalie Amanda Kasbohm (York, Maine) and placed her shot just inside the left post for her second goal of the season.  The goal increased the Beavers' lead to 2-0 at the 58:20 mark.

The Huskies turned up the pressure and got a goal back just over five minutes later.  Junior Taylor Smedberg (Oxford, Maine/Oxford Hills) chased down a loose ball inside the circle and slipped a shot by UMF senior goalie Patty Smith (Gorham, Maine) for her eighth goal.

UMF got the only goal of the first half at the 29:38 mark.  Sophomore Emma Martineau (Greene, Maine/Leavitt) played the ball into the circle from the left side, and junior Carly Raymond (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat) converted the feed when she knocked her shot by Kasbohm for her ninth goal of the season.

Both goalies finished the game with five saves.  UMF had an 11-9 edge in shots and an 8-7 advantage in penalty corners

UMaine-Farmington hosts Thomas College on Wednesday in a NAC East semifinal.  Southern Maine will be the sixth seed in the upcoming LEC tournament and will face Westfield State University in a quarterfinal round game on Saturday.
