FARMINGTON, Maine - University of Maine at Farmington field hockey junior Lee-Anne Greenleaf (Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner) and freshman Nickyia Lovely (Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner) were selected as Athletes of the Week in the North Atlantic Conference on Monday.
Greenleaf was named Player & Defensive Player of the week. The junior played in every minute of UMF's two NAC Tournament games this past week and was a big factor in the Beavers earning the 2016 NAC East Title. In a 4-0 Semifinal win over Thomas, the defender and her teammates held the Terriers to just two shots and only one was on frame. Then in the 1-0 double overtime NAC East Championship win over Husson, Greenleaf was a big factor in regulation and in the 19 minutes of overtime play. She was a force in the middle of the field stopping Husson's offensive drives and holding the Eagles to just 12 shots, a team that has averaged 17.7 shots per game. The junior was named NAC East Most Valuable Player for her efforts in the tournament.
Lovely was named Rookie of the week. She helped earn her team a spot in the NAC East Championship game. The rookie found the back of the cage to give the Beavers an insurance goal, 2-0, and then assisted in the Beavers last goal of the game in the 4-0 win over Thomas.
UMaine-Farmington will play on Saturday, November 5, as the Beavers will take on the 2016 NAC West Champion, Wells College, at Castleton University with the game time tentatively scheduled for 1:00 p.m. The NAC Crossover Champion will receive an automatic berth to the 2016 NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship.
