UMF stumbles in season opener

NASHUA, N.H. -- The University of Maine at Farmington men's lacrosse team opened the season with a 9-1 non-conference loss to Rivier College this afternoon at Raider Field.

The Beavers (0-1) are scheduled to visit Emmanuel College on Monday at 7 p.m. The Raiders improved to 2-0.

Tennessee Peters (Scarborough, Maine) netted the lone goal for UMF, which fell behind 7-0 after three quarters before Peters came through with 9:24 left in the game.

Shawn Donovan led Rivier with three goals and a like number of assists, while Jeff Kelly collected two goals and one assist and Danny Hooper scored twice.

Hunter Rowell (West Paris, Maine) recorded 10 saves in the loss. The Beavers outshot Rivier 26-22.

Chris Benoit registered 16 stops for the Raiders.
