Spartans pull away, put away Beavers

FARMINGTON, Maine -- After a 3-2 first quarter, Castleton State College scored seven times in the second on its way to a 20-2 victory over the University of Maine at Farmington in North Atlantic Conference men's lacrosse competition today at Prescott Field.

The Beavers (2-6 overall, 1-3 NAC) travel to New England College next Saturday for a NAC matchup against the Pilgrims at 1 p.m. The Spartans (5-6, 4-0) also have NEC as their next foe as Castleton visits the Pilgrims Tuesday at 4 p.m.

UMF challenged Castleton over the opening quarter with Brandon Melville (Farmington, Maine) giving the hosts leads of 1-0 and 2-1 before Colin Murray (Oshawa, Ontario) and Alex Green (Braintree, Vt.) each scored a goal to give Castleton a 3-2 advantage after the first 15 minutes. Green followed with three more tallies in the second as the Spartans surged ahead 10-2 at the break.

Green finished with five goals and an assist for Castleton, while Zach Davidson (South Burlington, Vt.) posted three goals, five assists and Murray and Phil Patterson (Essex, Vt.) each had three goals. Cam Ormiston (Wakefield, R.I.) and Will Stuhler (Madison, N.J.) each had a goal and two assists for the Spartans with Kenneth Bourneuf (Cananadaigua, N.Y.) and Adam Farmer (South Burlington, Vt.) closed out the scoring with a goal each.

Hunter Rowell (West Paris, Maine) stopped seven shots for the Beavers with Aaron Burr (Brooklyn, Conn.) manning the pipes for the final 11:30 with five saves. Castleton fired off 46 shots to UMF's seven (five of which came in the first).

Tom Manley (Londonderry, N.H.) recorded three saves in the victory. The Spartans also won the groundball battle wth 58 to the Beavers' 30, led by Davidson with six.
