FARMINGTON -- After University of Maine at Farmington took a 1-0 lead into intermission, Bates College battled back to beat the Beavers 3-1 in non-conference men's soccer action today at Prescott Field.
The Beavers (2-1) are scheduled to open North Atlantic Conference play on Saturday at home against Maine Maritime Academy. The men's game is slated for 1 p.m., followed by the women's. The Bobcats (1-1) are slated to visit Amherst College Saturday at 1 p.m.
John Murphy (Yarmouth, Maine) netted a pair of goals for Bates, while Ethan Hirshberg (Concord, N.H.) added a goal and Tyler Grees (Williamstown, Mass.) distributed a pair of assists.
Jordan Hale (Falmouth, Maine) continued his early-season success as the junior captain capitalized on a misplayed ball to give the Beavers a 1-0 edge 23:53 into their home opener. UMF goalkeeper Tennessee Peters (Scarborough, Maine) made the lead stand at the half as the sophomore made a diving stop on Hirshberg in the 28th minute to preserve the 1-0 edge.
The Bobcats charged into the second half as Hirshberg evened the score 54 seconds into the frame. UMF's Luiz Ristow (Joinville, Brazil) had two unsuccessful chances off direct kicks before Grees' slotted a pass that two defenders whiffed on before finding the foot of Murphy for a 2-1 lead for the visitors at 62:24. Murphy cashed in a direct kick at 75:13 to give Bates a 3-1 win over the Beavers.
Peters recorded three saves for the Beavers, who were outshot 11-9.
Brian Goldberg (New York, N.Y.) worked a scoreless second half between the pipes for the Bobcats. Goldberg made a pair of saves. Greg Watts (West Chester, Pa.) stopped one shot in the opening half.
