FARMINGTON, Maine -- Angelica Mazzola (Centerport, N.Y.) became the seventh Castleton State College women's lacrosse player to score 100 career goals as the Spartans rolled past the University of Maine at Farmington 19-6 in North Atlantic Conference East Division action today at Prescott Field.
The Beavers (2-4 overall, 0-2 NAC East) are scheduled to visit Husson University Wednesday for a divisional game with the Eagles at 4 p.m. Castleton stands at 4-5 (2-0) with a NAC East contest vs. Green Mountain Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Kate Auer (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) led Castleton with five goals and one assist, while Mazzola and Amanda Flodstrom (Stratham, N.H.) each finished with four goals and a helper.
Emma Morrison (Saco, Maine) scored four times for UMF, while Abbey Gilbert (Wilton, Maine) and Marisa Hanning (Hebron, Maine) each had a score. Molly Carbin (Scarborough, Maine) scooped a game-high eight ground balls in the loss and had an assist.
Mazzola got reached the milestone with her third goal of the contest 7:55 into the game to cap a 5-1 Spartan stretch. After Gilbert finished a Carbin feed, Castleton scored seven goals over the final 17:33 of the opening stanza for a 12-2 command at intermission.
The Beavers were able to knock the lead to nine goals on three occasions in the second half with Emma Daniel (Acton, Mass.) connecting with Morrison with 10:06 to play to make it 15-6, but Auer tallied twice in the final 8:56 to lead a 4-0 finish as Castleton took the 19-6 victory.
Hannah Goodenow (Freeport, Maine) registered 13 saves for the Beavers, who were outshot 42-16 in the contest.
Kelsey McDonald (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) and Lily Derbyshire (Little Compton, R.I.) shared netminding duties for Castleton with Derbyshire stopping three shots and McDonald two.
